‘I have a proposition for you, cowboy.’ Rei’s voice floated through Ethan’s cellphone and was followed by her sexy giggle.

‘Yeah?’ He stretched out on his worn, overstuffed couch and his cat leaped onto his stomach, where it made itself comfortable. ‘What’s that?’

‘I need you to dust off your camera and take my picture. Let’s put that photography degree of yours to use.’

‘How so?’ Ethan scratched the cat behind its ears and received a playful bite in response.

‘I realised that since I’m obviously going to be famous some day – and it’s my birthday next month – I should have someone take professional photos of me. Well, at least semi-professional photos. You work cheap, I assume.’

‘Hey …’

‘I’m just teasing. You know you’re my favourite.’

‘Favourite what?’ Ethan reached forward for his pack of cigarettes on the coffee table as the cat darted into the kitchen. ‘Favourite photographer? Favourite person? Favourite heartthrob?’

‘You’re using your imagination. Good, I like that. I knew you’d be up to helping me with my vision.’

‘And what is this vision of yours, exactly?’

‘Sorry, I’m not sharing my genius ideas until you agree to this.’

‘I guess since it is for your birthday …’

‘Yes! I knew you’d come through for me. You’re the best.’

He lit a cigarette. ‘Flattery will get you nowhere.’

‘You’re a little wrong on that one. Flattery will get me anything I damn well please – especially when you see what I’ll be wearing.’

Ethan shook his head and breathed out a cloud of smoke. ‘I see that it’s going to be one of those photo shoots.’

‘I can’t even begin to guess what you’re implying.’

‘Let me put it this way. Are you expecting me to mail the photos to Playboy or are you going to do it yourself?’

‘If anyone’s sending anything anywhere, it’s you mailing a letter to Penthouse Forum,’ she said. ‘Now, are you up to this challenge?’

‘Of course.’ He flicked the ash from his cigarette in the clamshell he used as an ashtray. ‘I think I can handle it.’

Rei gave a soft laugh. ‘We’ll see.’

Ethan was in the process of adjusting the lighting for Rei’s set when he heard her knock outside his studio, which was a small, remodelled pool house set behind the apartment he rented. He yanked open the wooden door, and Rei’s arms were instantly around his neck.

‘I missed you.’ Her Cupid’s-bow mouth formed a pout and her dark eyebrows knitted together, as if he’d been the one to move back after being in New York for the past year.

‘Sure you did.’ He gave her a squeeze. ‘Why wouldn’t you?’

Rei let out a laugh – an abrupt, playful sound he suddenly realised he’d missed. ‘A fair question.’ She pulled away from their embrace, her eyes sparkling like she kept the world’s most exciting secret. ‘So! Where do I get ready?’

He pointed to a white folding screen near one of the frosted windows that almost filled one wall. ‘Over there.’

‘With you in the same room?’ She clucked her tongue and gave him a wink.
